Long before the National Park earned its International Dark Sky Reserve status, the North York Moors were prized by locals for their unusually clear night skies, thanks to the low levels of light pollution across the moorland stretching inland from Whitby. The Dark Skies Fringe Festival celebrates this natural asset every autumn with a fortnight of stargazing sessions, talks, and evening events held at locations across the National Park, including the Dark Skies Discovery Centre at Danby Lodge, a short drive from Whitby itself.

Events typically include guided stargazing evenings with astronomers on hand to point out constellations, planets, and the Milky Way through telescopes, along with talks on subjects ranging from nocturnal wildlife to the science of astrophotography. Some sessions take a gentler approach, introducing the idea of pausing to notice the changing evening light and sounds as day turns to night, which has proved popular with visitors looking for a calmer, more reflective outdoor experience.

The festival’s blend of science, nature, and quiet spectacle makes it a lovely choice for couples seeking a peaceful evening away from artificial light, as well as families with older children who are curious about astronomy. Many sessions are suitable for beginners and require no prior knowledge, and telescopes are usually provided at the ticketed events, so there is no need to bring your own equipment.

Because sessions rely on darkness and clear conditions, most stargazing events run in the evening after dusk, and warm clothing is essential even though the festival takes place before the depths of winter arrive. Some talks and workshops are held indoors during the day, offering an alternative for anyone put off by an unpredictable autumn forecast. Numbers at the more popular stargazing evenings are often limited, so early booking is recommended, particularly for weekend dates.

For hotel guests based around Whitby, the Dark Skies Fringe Festival is a genuinely distinctive addition to an autumn break, offering an entirely different pace and outlook to the coast’s daytime attractions. A short drive inland onto the moors rewards visitors with views of the night sky rarely seen from more built-up parts of the country, making it a memorable, low-key evening out for stargazers of any experience level.
